Folks in central London will be able to take advantage of the new loo-locating texting service that was launched by the Westminster Council. This certainly comes in handy for those who are unfamiliar with London and yet absolutely need to go, texting 'toilet' to 80097 whereby the reply will consist of the street name of your closet toilet. The service is called SatLav, and has details on 40 toilets covering 8.5 square miles of Westminster. The business opportunity is a bit questionable though...response times are reported to be too slow and it currently costs .52 cents per text. Is this an idea before its time? Read the Reuters story.

Want to feel good, flex your vocabulary muscles AND do something good all at the same time? If so, then visit the website www.freerice.com. At the site you play a simple word game - select the correct one-word definition of a given word. It's fun and even better, a small amount of rice (20 grains) is donated by the United Nations World Food Program to people in need after every correct answer! The OEN staff, while hard at work in preparing for Angel Oregon 2008, the upcoming SwapMeet and other various events, have found FreeRice to be quite a tasty treat!

Stop by room 211 of the Lillis Business Complex (955 E. 13th Ave) in Eugene this Friday to watch University of Oregon students compete for the Venture Quest Business Plan Championship. The competition is much like OEN's Seed Oregon Tournament - MBA students form teams and give a 15-minute presentation to a panel of judges (who happen to be seasoned NW business professionals). After each presentation, the team will be grilled in a 20-minute Q&A session. The teams that make it through this portion will then move to the afternoon finals - the 60-second Elevator Pitch competition. The competition begins at 8:45 AM, so be sure to grab a cup of coffee before heading over to watch the competition!

Posted by Administrator Nov 27, 2007

That is the message that pops up on the screen of your laptop when a thief tries to use your laptop after stealing it. ( See the story on KGW.) That is, if you use Tualatin-based software from the new company GadgetTrak. This company is an Oregon Entrepreneurs Member and has launched their theft recovery software for computers, phones, iPods, and other gadgets. Visit Gadget Trak's blog for their latest news.

Green wins again. Eugene-based OsoEco, whose mantra is “Making Sustainability Fun & Approachable” took top honors at last night's round two of Seed Oregon.

Sustainability is truly on an economic roll. We'll see if this trend has long standing legs to go the distance and truly change the way America and the world does business. Right now it seems like Oregon and its entrepreneurial community are gearing up to lead the way of that change.

OsoEco who will move on to the finals of Seed Oregon in February with a chance to compete at Angel Oregon, offers an online forum where people can connect, discover, research, and recommend green products and services with friends, interest groups and experts.
Round 3 of Seed Oregon will take place on January 9, 2008. The deadline to apply to compete for Round 3 is December 27, 2007.

Recently, The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Pacific Power Foundation to support the OEN Entrepreneurial Services Outreach Volunteer Training Program. This training is the next phase of a pilot outreach program that was launched in 2006 and will benefit entrepreneurs and investors alike in Hood River, Pendleton, Joseph and Enterprise.

In 2006, OEN received grant funds from the US Economic Development Administration to extend its educational programs to a broader geographic region in the state and to build the infrastructure for a state-wide angel investor network. An advisory committee, comprised of 3 Economic Development District and Small Business Development Center Directors, was convened to determine what business development resources were lacking and needed in Hood River, Pendleton, Joseph and Enterprise. The number one need was “Networking”; the number two need was “Business Plan Development” from concept, to business plan development, mentoring, review and funding.

To address these needs, a popular OEN networking/educational program, PubTalk™ was replicated and launched in the communities listed above. This successful program allows ample time for networking before the keynote presentation. Typically, two early stage companies seeking advice or capital investment present 10 minute “pitches” to the audience directly after the keynote speaker. As well-seasoned executives, keynote speakers provide advice and guidance related to many of the issues, challenges and opportunities less experienced entrepreneurs will face along the path to success. To date, six events have been launched, five companies have been profiled, and one of these companies has connected with an investor.

The Entrepreneurial Services Outreach Volunteer Training Program willbuild on the success of the PubTalk™ program by 1) Identifying and recruiting local volunteer business experts 2) Establishing an Entrepreneurial Services Committee in Hood River, Pendleton and Joseph/Enterprise to plan for future PubTalk™ programs and Start Up Services Workshops, 3) Providing local Volunteer Committee Member Training by experienced OEN volunteer counterparts, 4) Providing on-going e-support via OEN volunteer counterparts and OEN web portal.
